Patrimonio industrial de As Pontes

Experience a unique blend of industrial and natural landscapes, featuring a stunning lake, an artificial beach, and islands for flora and birdlife.

The panoramic view of the village of As Pontes de García Rodríguez is impressive. Well known for its thermal power station, As Pontes offers an industrial landscape in which nature is now also present. The towers and the enormous chimney of the thermal power station crown a landscape that, however, offers much more. This is the case of the As Pontes lake. The natural environment of the former open-cast mine, closed in 2007, has been restored. The lignite mine was exploited since 1976 to supply energy to the thermal power station located at its foot. The mine shaft is covered with water, part of the river Eume, forming a grandiose blue lake. Its measurements are spectacular: almost 18 kilometres in perimeter and 205 metres deep. On the shore of the lake, close to the centre, there is an artificial beach more than 400 metres long. In the interior of the lake, there are two islands: one to represent the autochthonous flora and the other as an ornithological reserve. In As Pontes there is a mixture of industrial tourism, which shapes its personality, and natural tourism.
