Sendares 1 - Montefaro

Explore historic fortresses and scenic trails with stunning estuary views, perfect for hiking and mountain biking enthusiasts seeking adventure.

The route begins from the Castelo da Palma, built in 1597, it is one of the three fortresses that we can find in Punta da Redonda, an area that forms a narrow passage at the mouth of the estuary of Ferrol. Together with the Castelo de San Felipe and San Martín, a strong defense was created that allowed the military installations to be protected from possible enemy attacks, either by land or by sea, since the castles formed an impregnable triangle of fire together. We will find also other more modern military fortifications. These are the coastal batteries of howitzers of Segaño, Salgueira, Fonte Seca and Pena Bailadora, built around 1897 and 1898 as a defense of the Artabrian Gulf and the Ferrol naval base. Without neglecting the scenic value of this route, we will enjoy beautiful views of the estuary and its cliffs. The route runs almost entirely on trails and dirt tracks and is suitable for mountain biking. Despite not reaching a 9 km route, it has some unevenness enough to be considered a route with a certain physical demand.
