Ferrol
Ferrol is the city of contrasts. The estuary that bears its name, its medieval streets, military constructions and fortified castles. The city is built on its relationship with the sea. On its shores, the shipyards are born. The construction of large ships is the activity that has characterised Ferrol since the 18th century. It then became an industrial city, at the forefront of modernity. Its military and industrial tradition still survives in the emblem of the city, the Arsenal, which is still used by the Spanish Navy. Here we can find numerous elements listed as Assets of Cultural Interest. Another of the city's military constructions, and its main tourist attraction, is the castle of San Felipe. Located at the entrance to the estuary to control maritime traffic, the stone building we see today dates from the 18th century, although the original construction dates from two centuries earlier. In the centre of Ferrol there are other emblematic buildings. For example, the Parador Nacional de Turismo, a stately mansion with a seafaring air, and the Teatro Jofre, one of the most important works of theatrical architecture in Spain. However, Ferrol is also about nature. You only have to leave the city centre to discover spectacular, almost untouched beaches, such as DoniƱos. http://www.ferrol.es
