Sierra de o Xistral
Straddling Terra Chá and the Cantabrian Sea is this mountain range, which is battered by the Xistra - the wind from which it gets its name - and which stands out not only for its numerous caves and cavities, but also for being one of the largest peat bogs on the peninsula. Location: the ZeC Sierra de o Xistral is located in the province of Lugo and covers a small part of the municipality of As Pontes in the province of A Coruña (22,946 ha.) Access: from Vilalba link with the Lu-540 with detours to the east at Muras and Ourol towards O Valadouro. On the other side, local access from Mondoñedo. Other protected areas: Area of Special Protection of Natural Values and Biosphere Reserve. The rounded peaks of the Sierra de o Xistral form the mountain massif that separates Terra Chá from the Cantabrian Sea, from which comes the xistra, that wet and icy wind that permanently sweeps the area. The most significant feature of the area, apart from the cavities and caves such as King Cintolo, is that this is the largest system of peat bogs in the Iberian Peninsula.
