BAR STAKE HEADLAND
This site, included in the Namura 2000 Network as a Special Area of Conservation, is a European reference for the observation of marine birds. Its geographical location, in the far north of the Iberian Peninsula and in the westernmost part of the Cantabrian Sea, makes it a strategic point for watching the migration of these birds in Europe. The second half of the year, and especially during the months of September, October and November, is the best time to observe shearwaters, gannets, skuas, gulls, gulls and plovers on their migration towards the south. In a single day of observation, thousands of seabirds can be counted in addition to the spectacle of the annual migration, in Estaca de Bares there have also been exceptional sightings of the black-eared albatross, the Eurasian black-tailed pintail or the brown booby are some examples, and this is perhaps the best place in the Iberian Peninsula to try to see petrels of the genus Pterodroma. In addition to seabirds, and also in autumn, it is worth stopping to look for passerines in the area around the cape. These small birds travel from the north of the continent to Africa to spend the winter. A visit to the neighbouring beaches of Esteiro and Porto de Bares and the Ria de O Barqueiro (SPA) is also recommended. The cape can be reached from Porto do Barqueiro by the AC 100. An asphalted road leading from the Estaca de Bares lighthouse takes us to the observatory.
