ORTEGAL CLIFFS

ORTEGAL CLIFFS

The stunning cliffs offer breathtaking views and are home to diverse bird species, making it a prime spot for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts.

The impressive cliffs of Vixía Herbeira, in the municipalities of Cedeira and Carifio, offer one of the most spectacular views in Galicia. They form part of the Capelada mountain range and are the highest cliffs above sea level in continental Europe, exceeding 600 metres. In this beautiful spot the alpine pipit breeds, typical of higher altitudes, and it is possible to observe them all year round. In April the elusive white-capped blackbirds stop here before hopping over to the British Isles and Scandinavia to nest. During the autumn migration flocks of Pipits and Skylarks arrive from the sea, and it is also possible to see Golden Plovers and mixed flocks of Fringillidae in winter. Much rarer birds that, with a bit of luck, can be found in this area are the snow bunting and the piping plover. A good option for visiting this area is to go to the Vixia Herbeira sentry box and walk around the adjacent meadows from there, although the whole area offers good birdwatching opportunities.
